Beecham, Sir Thomas

(29 abr. 1879, St. Helens, Lancashire, Inglaterra–8 mar. 1961, Londres).

Director de orquesta británico. Nació en el seno de una familia aristocrática y fue un director de orquesta autodidacto, dedicado a cultivar y ampliar los gustos musicales británicos. En 1909 creó la Orquesta Sinfónica Beecham. En 1932 fundó la Orquesta Filarmónica de Londres y en 1947 fundó la Orquesta Filarmónica Real; además fundó compañías operáticas. Aunque su técnica adolecía de deficiencias notorias, fue un intérprete incomparable de la música que amaba, especialmente la de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Entre sus contemporáneos abogó en particular por Richard Strauss y Frederick Delius.
